Windward Studio
Al & Jane Roberts
Biography
Windward Studio is a collaborative effort of Jane and Al Roberts. They moved to Walla Walla from Cape Elizabeth Maine in the summer of 2002 and established their workspace at 1447 Bryant Ave, where they make their home. They sell their pottery, paintings and sculpture at the Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla, the Pendleton Center for the Arts and from their own showroom at the Studio.
Al started making wheel thrown pottery in 1988 after retiring from the practice of law and numerous other business activities. He studied with Genevieve Groesbeck in New Hampshire and then spent several sessions at the Haystack School of Crafts on Deer Island, Maine working with Mary Law and Catherine Hiersoux among others.
Jane has always drawn and painted with water colors and pastel but also studied wheel thrown pottery with Genevieve. For many summers they lived on a sailboat on the coast of Maine which afforded Jane a rich palette of land and seascapes. Most recently Jane has been sculpting in clay, making figures and abstract forms which celebrate the exuberance and variety of the natural world. She also draws and carves on functional clay forms made by Al, such as clusters of grapes on wine coolers, plates and vases.
Al strives to make an object with an appealing line and glazes his work in a simple style to emphasize the form. Jane seeks to make you smile.
